K Perms in our Abingdon salon
K perms have become increasingly popular with what feels like an overnight trend in the UK, especially for clients wanting soft waves for a relaxed look which takes its inspiration from popular Korean hair trends. Since the back end of 2025, many clients visiting our Abingdon hairdressers have requested a K perm, rivalling only the beach wave for its popularity. In our latest blog we answer your most popular K perm questions including what is a k perm, how long a k perm lasts and whether a k perm could work for you.
For more information about blow drying at your next haircut appointment, visit our perms service page. Finally, if you’re new to the salon and not sure how to get the most value from your next appointment, need a consultation or would value a conversation before booking, call or send a WhatsApp message on 01235 534705.
K Perm FAQ's
What is a K perm?
A K perm (also known as a Korean Perm) is a relatively new perming technique that focuses on creating bigger yet gentle and relaxed curls or airy waves for an easy to style modern and most crucially a natural look. K perms typically attract those with very straight hair who seek a less rigid style and value the option of being able to style their hair with the benefit of volume and a soft wave. Unlike traditional perms, which focus on producing tighter and largely more structured curl patterns, K perms offer increased movement for straight or flat hair for ease of styling. This can be achieved through rods which are more favourable for larger and softer waves rather than a highly fixed or artificial looking curl pattern.
How is a K perm different from a traditional perm?
Traditional perming methods include spiral perms, beach waves, root perm and body wave to name but a few. These types of perm benefit from tighter curl patterns and more distinctive smaller and volume of curls with some being bigger, smaller and looser than others. Conversely K perms mimic the natural movement and airy texture found in wavy hair rather than very curly hair. Perm rods are universally coloured and its these colours which denote the size of rod which when used directly translate to larger or smaller curls. In the case of a K perm, larger rods are used for both a larger and yet softer technique for an airy flow rather than intricate tighter curls.
One critical factor of K perms which is rarely mentioned is that when K perms are applied, their benefit is mostly felt around the face and this is the focus of attention for your Stylist who will focus perm rods to encourage a wave when face-framing. The major benefit of this is to ensure we have movement where we most need it and most people will benefit.
How long does a K perm last?
The longevity of a K perm varies on a number of factors including but not limited to the rate of your hair growth, your frequency and choice of hair products, your length of hair and frequency of haircut. As aan average, most clients can expect a K perm to last three to six months however it is worth emphasising that an average is largely based upon individual choices and hair habits which can favourably or grossly influence the lifespan of a K perm.
For example much longer and heavier hair may conflict with the impact of gravity where curls want to ‘spring’ up toward the scalp however shorter hair which will benefit from easier to maintain curls may ultimately be ‘cut out’ to maintain a shorter style via more regular haircuts. Using the right shampoo, conditioner, styling products and not washing your hair too frequently can also help preserve the shape.
Does a K perm damage your hair?
K perms edge on the side of using gentler perming solutions and for less processing time on average than perms which may benefit from tighter curl patterns. This means that on average K perms are typically kinder to the hair. Perms require a perm lotion and latterly a neutraliser which are chemicals to change the structure of your hair so it is important to schedule a consultation to establish whether a perm is a sound choice. If you are unsure, your advance consultation will be able to define whether a perm is right for you whilst working through any options and answering your questions.
During your consultation it’s likely that your stylist will assess your hair’s elasticity, porosity, and previous history before performing a K perm.
Who is a K perm best for?
A K perm one of the most popular types of perm however they benefit a niche audience working particularly well on clients with:
Straight or slightly wavy hair looking for soft movement
Flat hair needing more volume
Medium to long hair lengths wanting a natural shape
Clients who prefer low-maintenance styling
How do you style a K perm?
K perms are arguably the easiest type of perm to style and this is a major plus point. Most people that have a K perm often wash and air dry their hair and for those with shorter styles can leave their hair virgin or apply a light product to slick their hair back for a natural finish. Products that favour extra definition are mousses and curl creams. In-salon we use Only Curls (here’s £5 off your next curly hair order!).
Stylists at Abingdon hairdressers will recommend the right products to maintain softness without weighing the hair down. Avoid heavy oils or thick creams that collapse the wave pattern.
How should you care for a K perm?
The main difference between straight and curly/wavy hair is the need to introduce moisture yourself given curls and wavy hair with this largely coming via your product usage. Curly hair products are much more effective and geared towards curly and wavy hair styling, whilst avoiding more budget-friendly shampoo’s and conditioners can be supportive of a K perm.
Moreover, at your next hair appointment in our Abingdon hair salon, your stylist will be able to advise your on how to style your hair, how to wear your K perm, what to avoid and what to look out for alongside the pros and the cons.
Can you colour your hair if you have a K perm?
Yes and no. Your hair health really matters and this will be your guide. In many cases you can successfully colour your hair, yet the timing is important. Most stylists at our Abingdon hairdressers would recommend as a non-negotiable leaving at least two weeks between hair colouring and perming to avoid over-processing.
Conclusion
A K perm is a brilliant option for anyone wanting natural movement, lightweight waves, and easy everyday styling. With skilled application and proper aftercare, the results look modern, effortless, and beautifully soft. If you’re thinking about trying a K perm, speaking to experienced stylists at Abingdon hairdressers is the perfect first step.
