I bleached my hair at home! What can I do?

I Bleached My Hair at Home — What Can I Do?

If you’ve bleached your hair at home and you’re not happy with the result — whether it’s patchy, the wrong tone, or your hair feels dry and damaged — try not to panic. It’s a really common situation, and in most cases there’s a way forward. Here’s an honest, reassuring guide from the team at Wisteria Avenue in Abingdon.

First, don’t reach for more bleach

The most important thing is what not to do: don’t try to fix it with more bleach, or another box colour, straight away. It’s a very natural instinct — you want it put right immediately — but applying more product to already-stressed hair is the single most common way a fixable situation becomes a serious one. Whatever the problem is, the next step is to pause, not to pile on more.

Is the damage fixable?

In most cases, yes — to a point, and it depends on how far things have gone. If your hair is dry, rough or brittle but still intact, it can usually be nursed back to a much healthier state with the right care: gentle handling, deep conditioning and strengthening treatments, and giving it time. If the hair is actually breaking or snapping, that’s more serious — damaged hair can be improved in condition, but hair that has broken can’t be mended, only grown out and cut back to healthy lengths over time. An honest assessment from a stylist will tell you which situation you’re in.

Why a salon is the right next step

Whether your concern is the colour, the condition, or both, the best thing you can do is have your hair looked at by a professional — and the sooner the better. A stylist can assess the true condition of your hair, tell you honestly what’s realistic, and put together a plan. That might be a colour correction to even out patchiness or fix the tone, a course of treatments to rebuild condition, or often a combination — sometimes spread over more than one appointment to protect the hair. It won’t always be a quick fix, but it will be a safe one.

If you still want the colour you were after

If the look you wanted is still the goal, that’s absolutely worth discussing — but it comes after the hair is healthy, not before. A stylist will want to get your hair into good condition first, then work towards the colour properly. Trying to rush straight to the end result on compromised hair is how people end up back at square one. Our post on bleaching hair explains how lightening is done safely in a salon.
